Dear hamster users, what do you think of me moving calendar to the top-right upon hamster startup?
Objections?
P.S. This is not mockup, heh.
Update: Ok, thanks everyone! I think i now got the general feeling. By default hamster will go into the right side and i’ll think about somehow exposing the ability to swap places with the clock.

I would be annoyed by an application changing another application’s configuration. Even though having the date somehow makes sense to me. But then that should rather be changed by default in gnome-shell, instead of another application changing it.
i see your point.
the problem is that having them one next to the other clashes a lot and convincing gnome shell peeps to move the clock back to right might be as successful as trying to convince me to stick hamster in the notification area.
other alternative would be for hamster to go in the corner, but i’d argue that the information that hamster conveys is of bigger importance than the clock and thus could gain from the space around.
any suggestions?
That’s OK
Some people have already installed another gnome-shell extension to do precisely this… I wonder what would happen if Hamster was also trying to do it when both extensions are active together.
I think it’s not the role of hamster to fiddle with this. Maybe as an option disabled by default if really needed.
Some discussion with the gnome-shell designer might still be helpful… convincing them to move it is certainly not the goal, but they might have some better suggestion on how Hamster should be integrated.

as for graceful handling – i’m sure that can be sorted.
Can’t it just go beside the clock or as a little icon we could configure which it displays? Or maybe it can already be configured what to display. My gnome shell kept screwing up so I just put it in fallback mode. Hopefully it would still work with that. Right now my Hamster doesn’t even minimize to the tray.
I have used the Move_Clock from here http://intgat.tigress.co.uk/rmy/extensions/index.html so I am biased toward liking the clock on the right regardless of hamster…
It might be interesting to talk to the designers about this, although I suspect it is extremely unlikely they be convinced to move the clock back to the right.
No, that’s not ok. Don’t anger the gnome-shell designers, please.. Please.. Oh no they have heard us! Here they come, aaaaaah!
Seriously now, why can’t hamster live in the corner? Consider the “flip your mouse at the corner and click to get to hamster” advantage.
If I understand the question correctly, I don’t think I would like it. I’ll echo the other commenter’s statements that one app shouldn’t reconfigure another app.
I like my Hamster applet right smack in the middle of my menu bar, so its right there in the middle showing me how long I’ve been at something.
My 2 cents.
I support the ideas about not messing up the current configuration to which users might be accustomed to.
I’d be perfectly ok with hamster in the right corner.
Even if it really is more important info, it is simply a matter of getting used to look to the right for hamster info
Personally, i like the clock being in the middle… but that’s my personal preference.
Here is another idea: Why moving hamster to the right – and not to the left? Showing the hamster information instead of “Activities” next to the program icon would fit good – both informations are linked in some way. Actually hamster IS showing the actual “activity” i’m working on
But that could lead to problems with extensions that have already changed the “Activities” button.
The best would be to have some options to choose:
- Where to show: left/middle/right
- What to show: only icon/actual activity with time/ actual activity without time/ only time/ icon with time/…
I think hamster should be together the other applets with only the time and a icon (take out the Hamster string). It should be between battery applet and the user menu.
Hi Toms,
What did you think of the suggestions I made for integrating Hamster with GNOME Shell?
http://gitorious.org/gnome-design/gnome-design/blobs/master/mockups/hamster/hamster.png
i thought the mockups are suggestions for simplifying the UI, not much to do with the integration really.
i can agree with some parts but not sure about the others our thread broke around the email from Feb 18. i’ll resend it now!
oh and i see now that you have added the mockup for the notification area popup at some point
I’ve got to agree with Toms earlier assessment that the notification area is the wrong place for something that you are using often (certainly more often than the clock, I would think), and it is already a mess.
It reminds me of of an animated Windows XP systray (and I like GS, BTW), but you need to be more flexible with your designs and allow truly important apps like Hamster a place as prominent as the volume icon.
Please…think of the children.
Whith my eyes I can find the corner as fast as the middle. With the mouse the corner is quicker. Given that hamster is accessed more often than the callandar: the right corner seems better for hamster (in addition to not changing the shell as much).
While I do prefer the clock on the right (consistent with Windows, Mac, KDE, and previous versions of Gnome), I agree with those say that Hamster shouldn’t be affecting other parts of the desktop. Afterall, what happens if *two* extensions want to re-arrange the bar to put themselves in the middle?
